Tunganath, Chandrashila & Kartik Swami Temple with Adventures in Rishikesh

The famous Tunganath temple is not less than 1000 years old and according to scriptures is the third temple to be visited in the Panch Kedar circuit. Legend goes that, it was constructed by Pandavas after the Kurukshetra War. It is also the WORLDS HIGHEST Shiva Temple.

Chandrashila top offers a 360-degree view of some great mountains of Uttarakhand, like Nanda Devi, Trishul, Nandaghunti, Kamet, Dunagiri, Chaukhamba, Kedardome, Thalaysagar, Gangotri ranges, Jahanukut and  more. 

Kartik Swami temple is the only temple dedicated to God Kartik known as Lord Muruga in southern India. It is surrounded on all sides by snow capped peaks and stands in the middle beautifully.

We cover Tungnath temple & Chandrashila and Kartik Swami in this trek.  

Day 1 – Rishikesh to Ushara (6-7hrs drive):
Pick up at Rishikesh. Start early from Rishikesh to Ushara village. Have breakfast on the way. The drive will take you through Devprayag (confluence of Bhagirathi and Alaknanda), Rudrapryag (confluence of Mandakini and Alaknanda). We will visit the Dhari Devi temple on the way. Overnight stay in Ushara village.
Meals included – Dinner

Day 2 – Ushara to Chopta. (8800ft – 35km) and hike to Tunganath (12,070ft) and Chandrashila (13000ft) – (Trek distance: 8kms, 5 to 6 hours).
This is the summit day. Wake up early in morning and post breakfast drive to Chopta.
From Chopta start the climb to Tunganath temple. 3.5km.
Tunganath is the highest Shiva temple in the world, situated at 12,070ft
From Tunganath temple ascend further 1km up to Chandrashila top. The Chandrashila top gives a 360 degrees’ view of Garhwal and Kumaon peaks.
Stay at top for time before you start descend back to Chopta. Overnight stay in Ushara village.

Day 3 – Ushara to Mohan Khal – 96km, 4hrs drive)
Meals included – Breakfast and Dinner.

Day 4 – Mohan Khal to Karthik Swami trek. (3km One way) to Rishikesh –
We wake up early by 4am and start to hike towards the Kartik Swamy temple to catch the sunrise.
We leave to Kanakchauri, a beautiful village at the base of Kartik Swami temple. Kanakchauri is a very small temple town. The trek from Kanakchauri to Kartik swami temple take us through mild inclines and declines across a forest.
One gets a magnificent view of Garhwal Himalayan range. After spending some time here, we will descend back to Kanakchauri, then to Mohan Khal. Have breakfast, Pack up, and Drive to Rishikesh.

 Please carry along a Lunch box and reusable water bottles.

Lunch box is to pack lunch on the trek day to Tunganath and Chandrashila. Sari village i.e. the place where we stay, does not have plastic boxes. Lets preserve the practise and carry our own boxes.
