Hampta Pass Trek – 4N / 5D
Hampta Pass is a stunning trek, with ever changing landscapes. On one side is the lush green valley of Kullu — with forests, grasslands and flowers blooming on the side of your trail. On the other is the almost arid, stark landscape of Lahaul (Spiti), with barren mountains and almost no vegetation.
The Hampta pass trek is approx 24 km trek hiked over a period of 5 days in the Himalayas. It is an ideal trek for beginners.
Day 1: Manali to Chikka Campsite (2 hours drive from Manali & 1.5 hrs hike; 10,100 ft):
The first campsite of the Hampta Pass trek is Chikka. The picturesque drive from Manali, along with 42 hairpin bends, has panoramic views of Kullu valley. From the road head at Jobri, the campsite is a 1.5 hour hike through a mixed forest of pine, bright green maple trees and silver birch. Spend the evening at the campsite, walking around and acclimating for the rest of the trek.
Day 2: Chikka to Balu ka Ghera (5 – 6 hrs hike; 12,400 ft):
The initial hike is easy as you walk on plain land. After this point there is a slight ascend till you reach the Jwara Nalah (stream). This crossing is fun and chilly.
After crossing the nalah, we hike on a meadow followed by a boulder section for a couple of hours, leading to a trail on loose rocks all the way. Very gradual incline through the day. The lower Balu ka Ghera is enroute the Upper Balu ka Ghera and offers you a very pleasant view of the river bed. This campsite is gorgeous with views of the pass.
Day 3: Balu ka Ghera to Shea Ghoru via Hampta Pass; (8-9hrs; 12,800 ft via 14,060ft):
Start early in the morning Post breakfast to cross the pass. Initially it’s an hour’s gradual ascent after which the trail becomes steep uphill till the pass. You get the view of two valleys, the Kullu valley from where you started the trek and the Lahual and Spiti valley on the other side. From the pass, it’s a 2 hour steep descent, easing off into a flat walk till you reach the campsite. Shia Goru is called so because it is extremely cold there.
Day 4: Shea Ghoru to Chatru (10,900 ft) and excursion to Chandrataal lake: (14,100 ft) (5-5 hrs hike; 6hrs drive):
Today we end the trek as we head towards Spiti valley. The trail is easy but slippery at a few places but picturesque. You get the first glimpse of Chandra river as you are approaching Chatru. On reaching the campsite get some rest before heading to Chandratal lake.
The Chandratal lake is 70kms from Chatru and it takes 3 hours to reach. Spend some time at Chandratal lake and head back to Chatru campsite. Make the best use of this night as this is the last night of the trek.
Day 5: Drive from Chatru to Manali (65kms; 5-6hr drive):
After an early morning debriefing, bid the Spiti valley goodbye and head back to Manali. The journey from Chhatru to Manali is the most picturesque and you’d never want it to end.
